We spend one third of our life sleeping on our mattresses. Because of the regular use, mattresses tend to get a little dirty over time. Especially a child’s mattress with their occasional night time accidents. Mattresses accumulate stains from sweat, dead skin, and other bodily secretions. That’s not all of what’s on your mattress either. You might also have dust mites and even bed bugs. Because of the combined elements that are found on our mattresses, they can cause mild health problems; mostly allergies and a few skin irritations. This is why it is important to have your mattresses professionally cleaned at least once a year. However, in between those deep cleanings, you can perform your own surface cleaning to help maintain a clean mattress all year long. Leading Carpet Cleaning will share a step by step method to clean your mattresses.
How to Clean a Mattress
Step 1. Make sure you remove all of the bedding and mattress cover, if used. Take this time to wash all the bedding. When you do wash, use hot water and dry with high heat. This should kill any dust mites, bed bugs and bacteria that may be found living in your bedding.
Step 2. While your bedding is washing, start cleaning your mattress. You will want to vacuum the surface of the mattress on all sides. If you want a better or deeper clean when vacuuming your mattress, there are specially designed vacuum cleaners for mattresses that cost around $250.
Step 3. After you have thoroughly vacuumed your mattress, you will want to clean any stain that may be on them. Surprisingly enough, you can use a pet enzyme-based odor remover. This works well. You can even add upholstery cleaner to clean the stain on the mattress. You can also use regular dish soap mixed will some water for any stain. After you have cleaned the stains, you can also use a steam cleaner with an upholstery attachment to clean the rest of the mattress. You will want to let the top side dry before flipping it over to clean the other side of the mattress.
Step 4. After you have cleaned your mattress’s surface, you will want to deodorize it. This is simply sprinkling baking soda on the mattress and let it set for an hour or two and then vacuum it all up. You may want to flip your mattress over and do the other side as well.
Step 5. Your final step is to disinfect to kill any remaining bacteria that may be left behind. You can use one of two mixtures mix together either hydrogen peroxide or vinegar with water in a spray bottle. Then mist down the surface of your mattress on all sides. After the disinfecting mixture has had time to dry, you can now put your bedding back on your mattress and enjoy a clean and healthy night’s sleep.
