Why do we have carpet in our homes? Carpets add beauty and style to a home with all the colors and styles available. They can improve indoor air quality because new carpet is the lowest VOC-emitting flooring available. Carpet also acts like an air filter, trapping dust, pollen and other particles and removes them from the air you breathe. Carpets provide warmth and comfort with thermal resistance and they make slips and falls softer, making it great for homes with small children and the elderly. Carpet is also great at reducing noise with the added cushion pad underneath it. But just how did carpets evolve?

Evolution of Carpet

Prehistoric humans lived in caves with cold, hard rock beneath their feet. It probably didn’t take them long to start laying animal skins and other soft material on the floors. You may even say these were the first carpets. Carpet has a long and interesting history. 9,000 years ago, sheep and goats were sheared for their hair and wool that could be spun and woven to create a floor covering. Knotted carpet rugs are believed to have developed in western Asia some 4,000 years ago. As animals were domesticated, the reliance on using them for their hides decreased and the use of woven materials for this use increased.

First Carpet Mills or Factories

In the United States, the earliest carpets were large rugs made of woven wool. These woven rugs were made on large looms that were brought from England. The carpet industry in the United States started in 1971 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when William Sprague opened a carpet mill that allowed high-quality carpets to be made very quickly. The carpets we enjoy today have their own history that is different than that of their woven predecessors. It may surprise you to learn that carpets started off as handcrafted bedspreads. Around the turn of the 20th century, a young woman named Catherine Evans Whitener made a wedding present that was a handcrafted bedspread. She used a quilt pattern and sewed thick cotton yarn onto unbleached muslin fabric. She even clipped the ends of the yarn, so they would fluff out and make the bedspread softer. The process she used to make bedspreads became very popular and many families started to make a living by making these bedspreads. The demand for them began to soar and Dalton-area families were able to get through the Great Depression from the income brought in.

Dalton, GA is the Carpet Capital of the World

Machines were eventually developed to automate the tufting process. New synthetic fibers were developed after World War II. These fibers replaced wool and cotton and included nylon, polyester, acrylic and rayon. Today, over 90% of tufted broadloom carpets on the market are made of synthetic fibers. Dalton is still the center of the carpet industry and produces more than 70% of carpet output in the world. For this reason, Dalton is known as the “Carpet Capital of the World”.

Do you remember the first time you sat on your current couch? Can you still feel the excitement of sitting on your brand new piece of furniture? Do you remember how clean and beautiful it looked? Look at that same couch now. I bet that you can visibly see areas that you wished looked like it did the first day your couch was delivered. One of the main benefits of upholstery cleaning is the renewed appearance of your furniture, but did you know that there are other benefits as well?

Upholstery Deodorizer

In addition to removing spots or stains on your chairs and sofas, upholstery cleaning can also help deodorize your furniture. Fabric is an odor absorber. Anytime that any person, pet, shoe, or item of clothing touches your furniture odors are left behind. Think of all the different people that have sat on your sofas and chairs over the years. There is a lot of odor built up in your furniture. Professional upholstery cleaners also deodorize your furniture leaving it smelling fresh and clean.

Couch Stain & Odor Removal

Stains and odors are not the only things that can find a way into your furniture. Microscopic dust particles can actually scratch the fibers of your material with their jagged edges. These jagged edges can cause your fabric to look thin or dull. Cleaning your sofas and chairs will help get rid of the dust and extend the life of your furniture.

Sofa Cleaning Improves Indoor Air Quality

You may be thinking your furniture looks and smells clean and that you may not need to have it professionally cleaned, but you will want to think twice about letting the look of your furniture determine whether or not you need to call a cleaner. Pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens and indoor air pollutants can be hiding in the fabric of your furniture. So even if your furniture looks clean, you can improve your indoor air quality by thoroughly cleaning the furniture inside your home. If you have someone in your house that suffers from allergies or asthma getting those allergens out of your furniture will be of extra benefit to you!

Deep Clean Hardwood Floors

To begin your journey in reviving your hardwood floors, start with cleaning the floor’s surface. Make sure to thoroughly sweep or even vacuum the floor to remove all of the dirt and debris. You want the floor surface completely free of dirt and dust, or you can create a bigger problem as you clean the floors. Depending on severity of the wood’s condition, it will depend on what will be needed to revive the wood. In extreme cases, such as the wood floor is splitting, and has deep scratches or divots, it is strongly recommended you have a professional come and refinish you hardwood floors. If the wood looks old and dull with mild scratches, then you can use a commercial cleaning solvent to help repair and clean the wood. One that is often recommended is Bona or Rejuvenate which are hardwood cleaners. They do a great job cleaning wood, and even filling in mild scratches in the floor. Most hardwood floor cleaning solvents are in a spray bottle or can be mixed in a mop bucket with water. Depending on the solvent you choose, follow the manufactures directions for proper use. With your preferred cleaning solvent, begin cleaning the surface. Use a hardwood floor mop with a soft pad to prevent further scratches. Never use anything to rough on hardwood floors. Depending on how old or dried out the wood may be, you may need to clean over the surface two to three times to fully remove and penetrate the grain of the wood. After the wood floor has been thoroughly cleaned, you will want to seal or polish the surface of the wood. When polishing the wood make sure you are using a polish or buffing pad at the end of the mop. You will have a number of commercial products for sealing or polishing hardwood floors, again some of the top recommended products are Rejuvenate, Bona, Zep, or Mega are also good brands for reviving old dull wood floors. With your preferred polish or sealer, you will want to apply as directed. With your mop and a buff pad you will want to work your way out of the room to prevent walking on the wet solvents. Often two coats are needed to bring the wood to a prefect shine. However in the end, the results are worth it. Make sure you let each coat completely dry before applying the next coat along with moving in furniture.

Area rugs are often used to bring a little comfort and more color to a room. As they get dirty and are filled with stains, it is time for them to get cleaned. Cleaning an area rug can be a lot of work and depending on the type of rug, very difficult to clean. For those who need help or are looking for a few tips in cleaning their area rug, Leading Carpet Cleaning has your back. We will share a few rug cleaning tips and methods to help keep your home’s area rugs cleaner longer.

Vacuum Area Rugs

First, it is important to vacuum the rug first. You will want to remove as much dirt and hair and pet dander as possible before washing or cleaning the rug. If possible you will want to take your rug outside to a flat and waterproof or solid surface such as a patio or driveway.

Area Rug Shampoo

You can use a commercial shampooer that is designed for rugs. Make sure you follow all of the manufactures directions, especially what cleaning solutions can be used for rugs inside the machine. You can use a simple homemade cleaner, mixing together warm water (not hot), and liquid dish soap. Never use hot water on any rug as it can cause it to shrink. Additionally, always test any cleaner on the rug in a small spot first to make sure the rug doesn’t fade or become discolored. If you’re using the homemade mixture, and are going to clean the rug by hand, use a sponge or soft bristled brush. Dip your tool into the mixture and then apply it to the rug. Avoid over soaking the rug. Blot the cleaner gently onto the stains and let the mixture set for five minutes. You may need to lightly scrub the rug to help loosen the stain out. After cleaning the stains, you will want to rinse the rug. Using a garden hose, rinse the entire rug out. After rinsing the rug out thoroughly, use a shop vacuum or also known as a wet and dry vacuum to suck out the water from the rug. You won’t be able to remove all of the water from the rug. Your goal is just to remove as much as possible. Allow the rug to dry completely before you bring it back inside the home. You may need to flip it over to help air out the underside of the rug.

How to Remove New & Old Stains from Area Rugs

It is better to clean the small minor stains as they occur. For Persian or exotic style rugs, it is strongly recommended that you use a professional. Rugs are made of many different types of materials and fabrics and each has its own needs. If you use the wrong cleaner or wrong temperature, it can damage the rug. Maintain the rug by vacuuming and attending to stains as they occur. This can help keep the rug in better condition and of course cleaner. For deep area rug cleaning you can also leave that to the professionals.
